ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING AND BACKGROUND

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization in saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies, improving nutrition situation of vulnerable people, and working with smallholder farmers and communities to increase livelihoods and build resilience.  WFP operates its programmes in 81 countries with 6 regional offices and 81 country offices globally.

WFP Guinea Country Office is one of the 81 country offices. WFP has been present in Guinea since 1964 providing nutritious and immediate food assistance to affected populations during and in the aftermath of crises. WFP Guinea Country Office works in partnership with the Government to improve children’s school attendance and performance, enhance nutrition among the population, increase people’s livelihoods, build sustainable food systems and communities’ resilience to shocks whilst improving their access to profitable and stable agricultural markets. The Partnerships and Communication Unit under the Country Office works to position WFP with public, private and external partners to attract policy support, resources, technical assistance and innovative solutions to advance the work of WFP in the achievement of the SDG 2 (Zero Hunger).

The Partnerships and Communication Unit is seeking a partnerships intern. The internship holder will participate in partnerships activities daily. The intern will support the unit in relations with internal stakeholders and a multitude of public, private, and external entities. These can be governments, United Nations agencies, intergovernmental institutions and their member states, international financial institutions, individuals, businesses, foundations, and NGOs.

COUNTRY CONTEXT

Although rich in natural resources, Guinea faces major socio-economic challenges. The poverty rate is alarming, and 21.8 percent of households are food insecure. Malnutrition remains high: 6.1 percent of children under 5 are affected by global acute malnutrition, 24.4 percent are stunted, and 12 percent are underweight.

Rural populations are particularly vulnerable to food insecurity. Among those affected by severe food insecurity, 71.1 percent practice subsistence farming. Smallholder farmers comprise the majority of the country’s poor, showing a correlation between poverty and food insecurity. Besides, they have poor access to seeds and fertilizers, production and processing equipment, storage facilities, basic infrastructure and affordable financial services. Although women play a crucial role in agriculture, particularly in food production, they have difficulties in accessing land and productive resources, education, formal employment and income-generating activities. Their work is often unpaid and undervalued. Women make up 60 percent of people suffering from chronic hunger, and the majority of rural people living in poverty. Unemployment is high, particularly among youth and women, and literacy rates are low, with only 32 percent of the adult population able to read and write. School attendance is also low- 22 percent of primary school-aged children are out of school. Moreover, Guinea faces major socio-political challenges and the approaching parliamentary and presidential elections increases the risk of ethnic and political violence paralysing economic activities in the country.

JOB PURPOSE:

Facilitate the work of senior staff to effectively position WFP with public, private and external partners to attract policy support, resources, technical assistance and innovative solutions to advance the work of WFP, while supporting member states in the achievement of the SDGs and Zero Hunger and emphasizing WFP’s contributions in this regard.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The main duties and responsibilities of the intern include:

• Contribute to project reporting of the China partnerships portfolio, ensuring donor visibility and maintaining good partnership relationship with the donor.
• Support senior managers in the preparation of briefing notes, talking points, strategic agreements, joint strategies, and MOUs in order to promote the SDGs and Zero Hunger on the national, regional and global agenda and to reach advantageous outcomes for WFP.
• Participate in the development of new projects including drafting project concept note and project proposal under the guidance of head of unit and approaching to potential donors for funding, with a focus on the China government and the Chinese private sector.
• Proactively contribute to other existing partnerships portfolios, including partner profiling and outreach activities, with the aim to maximize resources and leverage policy and technical support for WFP’s work.
• Perform other duties as required.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE FOR ENTRY INTRO THE ROLE:

• Has experience or demonstrated interest in international humanitarian development.
• Has experience in working on Partnerships. Experience in building partnerships with the Chinese government or Chinese private entities will be an asset.
• Has developed strong narratives by using data analysis visualization to enable action-oriented discussions with partners.
• Has prepared briefs to raise resources for operations and collaborated for timely registration, maintenance and update of contributions and forecasts.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, including substantive analysis and report writing skills.
• Has motivated team spirit and contributed to a gender-balanced, inclusive and sound working environment.
• Has familiarity of United Nations system and working environment.

STANDARD MINIMUM ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• Currently enrolled in a recognized university or graduate school or be a recent graduate (max. 6 months after graduation) in University degree in Political Science, International Development, Development Economics, International Relations, Law, Marketing, Communications or other relevant field,

         Or, Has attended University courses in the last 12 months and have completed at least two years of   undergraduate studies.

• Excellent command of English and working knowledge of a second UN language would be an asset.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).

Language:

Excellent written and spoken English and Chinese is required (proficiency/level C), working professional level of French is desired.

Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, weLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

• Understand the role of WFP Seoul office in the whole WFP system
• Learn how to develop and manage partnerships with government counterparts
• Learn practical skills in Private Partnerships such as developing private sector partnerships and coordinating the private sector campaign.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

• Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP (14% DSA, up to the maximum amount of US$1000) per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
• WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
• WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
• WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
• Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply : sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.

No appointment under any kind of contract will be offered to members of the UN Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ), International Civil Service Commission (ICSC), FAO Finance Committee, WFP External Auditor, WFP Audit Committee, Joint Inspection Unit (JIU) and other similar bodies within the United Nations system with oversight responsibilities over WFP, both during their service and within three years of ceasing that service.
